When I coach, I often describe the season as a marathon, not a sprint. Over four or five months, and twenty to thirty games, progress doesn’t happen all at once. It builds day by day, through consistent effort. Ideally, that work culminates in a season everyone can feel proud of. For some teams, that means competing for a championship. For others, simply finishing strong is an accomplishment worth celebrating.
Like a marathon, a season unfolds in phases. It begins with preparation, as athletes train and condition their bodies. Then come tryouts and team selection. Once the roster is set, the team enters a goal-setting phase, where expectations are established. The competition phase follows, where the team begins to form its identity and learn how to work together.
Midway through the season is a critical checkpoint. It’s an opportunity to reconnect with players and revisit the goals set at the beginning. Are those goals still relevant? Or is it time to adjust and respond to where the team is now? Some seasons continue into playoffs, while others end earlier, but every season should conclude with reflection, celebration, and a thoughtful wind-down.
Right now, my team is in the middle of our marathon season, and I wanted to intentionally reconnect with my players. While team culture is built every day, a structured mid-season check-in can reveal where a coach’s focus is most needed. This year, our check-in aligned with Spring Break, which created a natural opportunity to step away from practice for 30 minutes and reflect.
To guide this process, I created a simple timeline reflection tool. Players were asked to look back at the beginning of the season, assess where they are now, and think ahead to how they want to finish. I used this prompt:
Fill in the key moments from your season so far, especially those that mattered most to you leading up to Spring Break. Then, map out the important events and milestones you’re looking forward to for the rest of the season.
As always, the responses were insightful. Every player identified our first tournament as a defining moment for the team, an experience that helped shape our identity. Many also shared personal milestones, such as hitting their first home run or playing in their first varsity game. These reflections offered a deeper understanding of what matters most to them and what they take pride in.
Looking ahead, every single player named the same goals: winning a league championship and qualifying for the playoffs. Their shared focus reinforced a strong sense of unity and commitment.
With this insight, I now have a clearer framework for how to support my players through the second half of the season. We are halfway through our marathon, and the finish line is just beginning to come into view.
