All season long, we ask our players to be open to growth. Growth comes through feedback, trial and error, honest conversations, and personal reflection. As coaches, we must be willing to embrace that same process if we want to become the best versions of ourselves for our athletes.
At the end of a long season, I encourage coaches to take a week to rest. Create a little distance from the emotions, pressure, and pace of the season before jumping into reflection. Once you have had time to recharge, ask yourself these questions:
- What went well this season that aligned with my coaching philosophy and values?
- Where did my coaching decisions, communication, or team culture fall out of alignment with the coach I want to be?
- When did my athletes seem the most connected, confident, and engaged, and what was I doing in those moments?
- What changes, goals, or new ideas do I want to bring into next season to better align my actions with my philosophy?
Growth does not stop when the season ends. Reflection is one of the most powerful tools coaches have because it helps us coach with greater intentionality moving forward.
This season, one of my biggest takeaways was seeing the impact of stepping away from physical skill development to prioritize team meetings focused on culture building. During these meetings, we worked on connection, communication, and leadership. I watched my athletes grow closer to one another, and I truly believe that connection became one of the biggest reasons our team was successful this year and ultimately qualified for the playoffs.
The meetings happened sporadically depending on our schedule, but next season I want to be much more intentional about protecting that time. My goal is to dedicate 30 minutes each week during practice to maintaining our team culture, strengthening mental skills, and developing leadership within the team.
As our players get older and our team becomes more competitive, the importance of connection will only increase. Strong teams are not built on talent alone. They are built on trust, communication, and shared purpose. I am excited to continue growing this part of our program next season.
